Very often in India, the sports person is advised to just participate in drills that are given to school children in order to prepare them for a sports day event. The concept of sport specific training is not even heard of. Most athletes cannot perform to the best of their abilities in the desired sport because of a lack of educated , trained physical instructors who understand the game and the specific fitness requirements for the same. Functional fitness in any sport is extremely important to aid smooth and injury free movement during the sudden posture changes required by most sport movements.

The Hindu, dated 15th October 2008 has quoted as saying The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE)s rule that sports training should be imparted to youth as a recreational activity is followed by a few colleges. Most of the institutions still accord the least priority to sports and games which are essential for good health and fitness.

If the situation were to improve, the importance of physical education has to be realized by managements of the educational institutions. They have to create sports infrastructure and give enough time for the youth to become physically and mentally strong by undergoing training under the expert guidance of physical directors.

Mr. Chinnappa Reddy regretted that excessive emphasis was laid on classroom learning of the mainstream subjects and the students have little time to develop their inherent talents in sports and related activities.
